Job Title: Director, Health, Safety, Environmental & Quality

Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Chief Operating Officer, provide direction to the employer’s Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality management systems. Ensure a robust Safety Management and Quality Management System is in place and effectively drive continuous improvements relative to safety and quality performance trends. Ability to effectively lead the Safety Culture and direct and indirect reports.

Job Functions:

  • Briefs the President on Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality concerns and provides information required for decision making,
  • Interpret, monitor and implement government regulations as they apply to the operation (FAA, EPA, OSHA, CERCLA etc)
  • Develops, coordinates, implements and monitors the outputs from our Safety Management and Quality Management Systems.
  • Develop and implement effective HSEQ policies and procedures to improve Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality in all aspects of company’s Operations.
  • Track and monitor specific Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality improvement actions.
  • Conduct Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ) presentations for our employees and external customers.
  • Identify, track and monitor HSEQ Key Performance Indicators.
  • Assist all departments in developing action(s) and/or changes to facilities, training, procedures, etc., to improve HSEQ performance.
  • Disseminate HSEQ trending information within the Operational Leadership Team.
  • Provide quarterly summaries of HSEQ KPIs to all employees.
  • Ensure appropriate quality management oversight standards are applied internally and externally at the Departmental and Operating Group Levels.
  • Chair the Operational Leadership Team weekly meeting.
  • Chair the Safety Management Review Team Process.
  • Chair the Post-Incident Review Board Process.
  • Participate as a member of the accident investigation team and prepare all necessary reports.
  • Manage the Safety Incentive Program.
  • Collect and disseminate information on all incidents and accidents.
  • Keeps current on new ideas and techniques in the health and safety field.
  • Conduct routine base visits to observe operations and obtain employee feedback.
  • Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, commitment to innovation, efficiency and fiscally responsible activity.

Required Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles of accident prevention, loss control, industrial safety and industrial hygiene.
  • OSHA, EPA, ANSI, FAA, CAMTS, IS-BAO and other relevant standards.
  • Worker’s Compensation laws and case decisions relating to those laws.
  • Principles of effective training.
  • Principles of program management.
  • Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity.

Ability to:

  • Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
  • Keep the Operational Leadership team informed of HSEQ issues.
  • Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public in face-to-face, one-on-one and group settings, and using a telephone.
  • Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.


  • Bachelor degree in a Safety related field, Master degree preferred.
  • Five to Ten years of management experience as a Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality Director/Manager (HSEQ)
  • Previous experience managing an HSEQ division and/or team. Experience in leading direct and indirect reports
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist preferred.
  • Previously influenced senior managers, built strong relationships and driven a culture of safety.
  • Ability to establish credibility and respect and build strong working relationships with Safety Chairs, Safety Reps and Division Leadership.
  • Ability to recognize the value and responsibility of working in a team, actively supports and develops team members, quick to identify and problem solve any issues.
  • Able to work to deadlines and adapt to changing condition’s ability to generate effective and pragmatic solutions to new situations and problems as they are presented.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of personalities and behavioral styles in order to work collaboratively with a variety of people and to make informed decision around resourcing, reporting structures and relationships.
  • The ability to inspire confidence of the other senior managers through timely delivery of information and plans; works independently of President but consults where appropriate.
  • Strong presentation and computer skills necessary.
  • Strong written and verbal communications necessary.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office software.
  • This position is designated Safety Sensitive for purposes of the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act.
